She could still feel the elevated heart rate, the light clamminess on her skin that was rapidly cooling along with her steadying nerves.
It wasn't Rome. It wasn't Dixon.
The memory of the comm with sickbay calmed her quicker. No one, except maybe Douglas, should have been able to see her internal panic. But she had to confess to herself that it was there. That, for a moment, she had believed herself failed in her personal mission to protect him. She could view the Intelligence officer with greater disparity, a colder logical ability. Joanne looked down at her screen again, at the minimal report she was able to get on Jerome Madsen. It appeared genuine, the codes she used were valid, so unless the Orion had her claws into more people than the Hyperion's command team, the officer was definitely in need of some rescuing.

Though, dependent on her persuasion skills, he might want to stay....
She smiled to herself, enjoying her own ascorbic comment for a moment, it also reminding her of Danann. Commander Danann, as Feyna should be calling her.
Still with the smile on her face, Joanne brought up the information on the nebulae, as she had on almost a regular basis trying to find something she'd missed, something that would help. As she did so, she decided to herself that she would allow herself to like the new XO. It had been a long time since she'd allowed herself that. Rome kind of forced himself in, and the Andorian, together with Sumner, had snuck up on her. But she hadn't spoken to the latter two since they had all been stationed together.
A girl cannot live on one friend....and the Admirals didn't count.

Rome does that! another brilliant log Soph! I am loving Feyna's internal monologues :D

CTO Lt Feyna SD 11405.19

Joanne sat back, a little heavily, in her chair. The skuttlebutt around the ship was that the Commander had failed her first away mission as new XO on board. Feyna admitted to herself that she was kind of sad to find out that the crew could turn so quickly on someone who had been given an almost impossible mission. The plan had been good, but the Orion was good too. And definitely had the advantage.

Her sources had also whispered to her that someone had found a secret something in something that had been discovered whilst the away mission had been off doing their thing. She grabbed a couple of pins from the table in front of her, and she swept her hair back in it's rather severe looking bun, all the while thinking
If it's a something that's been found, a secret something, then I'd better get my arse into warp speed and report to Jonathan

Log, SD 11409.08

Feyna sat in her quarters, wondering whether she felt brave enough to go onto the base and 'socialise'. She could face down a Hirogen, hell, she was willing to face the Borg, but when it comes to making small talk, she could feel the chill setting in, freezing her ability to be likeable.

The goosepimples rose on her flesh as she imagined how it would go, with her having a set plan. She would start talking to someone, and end up saying something highly inappropriate about the best way to use a fillet knife, or how many exits there were in the room. If she had been able to fulfill her intended plans with Danann, then she would have been okay. Plans, intentions, a good cause to make the First Officer feel better. And to find out why she's been off her game.

Sidetracked by the thought, she shook her head, knowing she can't do anything without Danann wanting her assistance - as a friend or otherwise. And so back to the question in hand. To go to the station or not.

Taking a deep breath, she picked up a PADD with a novel on it, and decided to head to the bar on the station. Hiding in some fantasy with a strong drink wasn't usually her thing, but right at this moment in time, it sounded like just what she needed.

CTO Feyna 11410.27

She knew she wasn't the poster child for Starfleet. That was why Intel had picked her. Her coldness after her parent's 'murder' by the Borg, her ability to hide her true feelings, the fact that she didn't connect emotionally....

But she had.
She could sense a change in Rome. He was still their Captain, but he, as a person - there was something different. And it left a niggle in the back of her mind.

He had turned off the sensors during his discussion with the prisoner. When had he ever done that before? When had he ever been ashamed of the way he treated someone in the Brig, if he even was ashamed of it. It could easily be that he knew Starfleet would not approve of what he had done. Feyna tapped her front teeth with a forefinger as she thought whilst she worked.

If he had done something that would go against the structure and morals of Starfleet, would that stop her following him? "No", she said aloud, startling an ensign beside her. She gave him an apologetic smile. "Not you Francis, What you are doing is fine. Carry on."

There had only been one other person that she had once trusted the way she did Rome. And, of course, he had also just shown up. But her loyalty is to Rome now. Not to...anyone else.

If Rome needs her, then she will be there. Most likely carrying a Raktajino.

Log SD11411.10

45 minutes. It had been 45 minutes that Joanne had been sitting there, watching the person in the cell. The person who, when not wearing an expression of malicious enjoyment, Joanne had decided seemed a little insipid. The kind of person who, if she had been given enough time with her, she probably would have picked out as a patsy, someone who would follow someone blindly, given the right incentive. And Adria is definitely someone who knew people’s weak points.

Nalta seemed to think she could influence Feyna into suspecting Rome. But she knew Rome well. Probably as well as most other people on board. She had been his shadow for months at his lowest moments. And had seen him re-strengthen himself into a Captain that she, eventually, hadn’t minded leaving Intel to follow. She would probably follow Rome over….over decisions she had made in the past. For other people.

Feyna re-adjusted herself in a chair, making sure that no one part of her body started going numb. With Adria around, she knew she would have to be on top form. Especially knowing Nalta was her creature. Though, Joanne still couldn’t help being curious whether Adria would have been good for Rome, in a different universe, under different circumstances.

Realising her mind has wandered, she readjusted her focus, and continued looking over at Nalta, waiting for her next move.

Log SD11502.23

She took a moment from her PADD to stretch and look around her. The observation deck was the same as it had been when she visited it earlier that week, and the week before, and the week before that. It was the people who changed: Those sentient beings of flesh and blood, feelings and emotions. It was the people who made a place, not walls or furniture. Joanne decided it was time for a true break, and stood up towards the nearest replicator.

“Lime and ginger tea, hot.”

She took the steaming cup from the machine, and turned to return to her table. As she travelled, she noticed a couple, obviously only focussed on each other, the male murmuring unintelligible nothings to the woman. Joanne passed them by, returning to her seat, and returned to her PADD.
After a few minutes, she stopped. She couldn’t concentrate. What had changed between now and 10 minutes ago? Putting the reading down a second time, she picked up her tea to occupy her hands, looking back over to the couple.

They looked so happy together. But then looks can be deceiving, right? Feyna, of all people, was well aware that appearances are not everything. The number of times she had put on a front for others, for SFI, even for the crew of the Hyperion, especially Rome and Lyon. But also can’t what you be showing for others be the truth too? How happy they looked to be with each other.

Joanne let out a sigh. A small one. She hadn’t let anyone in that way since, well, since she had let herself have inappropriate feelings for an unavailable target. She readjusted herself in her seat, the topic of thought making her uncomfortable. Why? She asked herself? Was she still embarrassed? No. Lyon and Miller have a way of making people feel comfortable. One of the many reasons they were so sought after in SFI. They both know what happened, and that it’s been resolved. And that’s why the three of us can be friends. So why did she feel uncomfortable?

As she sipped at the tea, the ginger warming her insides, she realised that’s why she felt uncomfortable. She missed it. She missed affection, and passion, and someone looking at her the same way as the couple across the room. Smiling to herself, resisting a laugh out loud, Jo thought again “Actually, I would be happy with just the passion at the moment”
Shaking her head at herself, but feeling more at peace with her self-understanding, she moved her chair so her back was facing the couple. Picking up her PADD again, she determined to resolve her current situation as soon as someone suitable came along, and continued reading.
