What's your favourite kind of Trek tale?

Postby Aoibhe Ni » Wed Feb 12, 2014 3:54 pm

I'm curious to know what kind of story you prefer in Trek?

The Alien of the Week kind, where we all learn a valuable lesson about diversity and tolerance (or not...)?
The Apocalyptic kind, where your beloved ship ends up with exploding consoles, gaping holes in the hull, and your crew all have singed uniforms and sooty faces?
The Space Battle kind, where all hands have to brace for impact?
The Comedy kind where everyone swaps bodies/age/species?
Or, heh, the "stuck in a cave/turbolift" bottle episode kind?

Lemme know! And add to the list if you have a different favourite.

I like alternate realities or out of body type stuff. "Parallels", "Inner Light", etc...

Or any episode where O'Brien suffers, of course.

I'm partial to the philosophical explorations, like "Far Beyond the Stars" and "The Pale Moonlight" from DS9, and "Measure of a Man" and "The Drumhead" from TNG.

What is Science Fiction, or really any fiction, if not a mirror for us to explore ourselves?

Also, the massive space battle episodes from DS9 are always fun.

Three of the top 5 episodes of Trek, ever, IMHO.

Also worth mentioning is DS9's "Rocks and Shoals" which did a magnificent job of portraying not only the moral ambiguity involved in an extreme survival situation, but also the nuances of the Jem'Hadar, and their relationship with the Vorta. It didn't get as deep as the other two from the series I listed, but it did a lot to frame the tragedy of the Dominion War, and really showed what the show's writers could do with what was ostensibly a simple premise.

I am a great fan of conniving, backstabbing and extreme complexity. So any episode with the Romulans in it...

I love a good apocalypse, myself.
Year of Hell on Voyager, is a particular favourite cause it finally showed how very badly everything could go for a ship alone and far away from any type of help. Starfleet's all shiny and new all the time, so the few glimpses we get of the fried conduits behind the bulkheads are worth seeing.
